Yahoo! News - Chaotic prison always on the brink

Life at the Abu Ghraib prison meant lurching from crisis to crisis.

DiNenna says he reported daily food shortages to his commanders in Baghdad. The food either ran short or was tainted with dirt and bugs, he told them. He feared that 4,500 restless prisoners would riot and overwhelm the American guards. In early November, his e-mails became exasperated and angry: "Who in the hell can fix this?" DiNenna demanded.

Days later, a riot erupted that took more than 70 U.S. soldiers to quell. Inmates rioted again two weeks later. That time, soldiers shot and killed four prisoners.
